Put your coding agents to work with Jira Automation

AUTHOR: Jira product team

Jira Automation now supports GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude as native action steps – available alongside every other action in your automation rules.

Use event-based or scheduled triggers, and Jira passes the full structured work item context automatically. Pass a system prompt with custom instructions so agents can handle adaptive flows, like opening a PR for a simple fix or escalating high-severity work.

Each invocation is captured in Jira’s audit trail, so teams can see what ran, why, and what it produced.

How to get started

  1. Define the trigger: In Jira Automation, select a trigger.

  2. Add the action: Search for and select your preferred third-party agent.

  3. Configure: Add any custom instructions for the coding agent.

  4. Monitor execution: Once the automation has run, you'll see session logs on the Jira work item and can review all steps in the audit log.

Notes

  • Coding agent automation actions are available to all Jira customers on a paid plan with Rovo enabled.
