A clearer, more focused Jira work item

AUTHOR: The Jira team

The work item is the screen you open most in Jira – to check status, update a field, read the latest comments, see related work, and view outputs. It's where the work actually happens, which is exactly why we thought hard and tested before changing it.

Over the years, the view picked up some clutter: fields split across three panels, an actions menu you had to scan top to bottom, an activity feed that was hard to sort. Each addition made sense on its own, but together they added friction to the foundation of your work in Jira.

So we've redesigned it. Same data, same fields – but with less clutter and fewer clicks. The new work item puts what matters first, keeps the things you need within easy reach, and takes fewer steps to get through everyday updates.

We want to be straight about one thing: this is a visible change to a screen you know well, and a new layout always takes a moment to get used to. What hasn't changed is everything underneath – your fields, work types, automations, integrations, and reporting all work exactly as they do today. Nothing to migrate, nothing to reconfigure. Just a cleaner view on the same Jira.

What's new

A layout that reads top to bottom. The view is organized around a simple flow: where you are, what you're looking at, and what you can do next. Status is more prominent and gives you visual feedback when you move work forward. Actions are organized more consistently.

Customize your view. Pin, reorder, and hide fields to match how you work – without changing what anyone else sees. You can also reorder sections such as Details, Automation, and Development.

Related work, without losing your place. Child and linked work are in consistent tables with inline editing and sortable, resizable columns. Click one and it opens in a side panel instead of navigating you away – so you keep your place on the parent item.

Everything attached in one place. Uploaded files, linked Confluence pages, Loom recordings, and web links now share a single Attachments section, with tab filters and a grid view so you can scan attachments at a glance. One place to add things, one place to find them.

A cleaner activity feed with sort controls. The All and History tabs are now consolidated within a single All view. Comment sorting is improved with a new "Sort by newest activity" option. The comment editor floats at the bottom so you can read the thread while you reply.

Voice-to-text. Speak to add a description or comment instead of typing. Your words land straight in the editor.

Bring in an agent, right from the work item. Need a hand? You can launch an agent directly from the work item. Its activity and outputs stay linked there, with the work, instead of scattered across other tools.

Prefer the classic view? You're in control

We know this is a change, so there are two ways to go at your own pace:

  • Anyone can switch back for themselves – anytime, from the “…” (More actions) menu on any work item. Your choice sticks, and it doesn't affect anyone else's view.

  • Admins can control the rollout for a whole site – the “New work item view” toggle lives under Jira Admin Settings > System > General Configuration > Options. It's on by default, but you can turn it off before the rollout reaches your site and switch it back on whenever you like.

FAQs

Question

Answer

Did anything change with my data, fields, or automations?

No. This is a visual and experience refresh only, with a few new capabilities. Your fields, work types, automations, integrations, and reporting all work exactly as before.

I don't like the new layout. Can I go back?

Yes. Any individual can switch to the classic view from the "..." menu on any work item, and admins can toggle it for a whole site in admin settings.

Why the change?

The view had gradually accumulated clutter that slowed down the most common task in Jira. The goal was fewer clicks and less visual noise for everyday work – not change for its own sake.

When does the new view reach me?

It's rolling out automatically to Jira Cloud sites through the end of the year. Sites on bundled release tracks get it on their standard schedule (sandbox first, then production).

Where did [____] go?

A few things moved to make room for a clearer flow:

  • History now lives in the All tab. Find comments and changes together in Activity, with no switching between tabs.

  • Pinned fields now appear in Details. There's no separate “Pinned” section to check, so your key fields sit with the rest of the work item's details.

  • Long content shows a preview first. Long descriptions and child and linked work tables show a preview by default, so you scroll less. Select “Show more” to see everything.

  • Less-used actions are in the “…” menu. Actions like Restrict are grouped there, which leaves the main view uncluttered.

  • Automations are in one panel on the right. Everything automation-related is in a single place.

  • AI actions are under the Rovo button. Select Rovo in the bottom-right corner of the work item to find them.

How do I share feedback?

Give feedback directly via the “…” menu on any work item, or on our community post. Our team is reading and responding.
